Mini-Skirts is 2022’s Biggest Fashion Statement

According to Fashion Stylists, mini-skirts will be the most popular trend for 2022.

Currently, skirts are a piece of clothing what is part of the wardrobe of most women around the world. Today there are options for all tastes: pleated skirt, jeans skirt, fair skirt, micro-skirt and much more.

Last year, mini-skirts made their triumphant return, cropping up on the S/S runways such as Miu Miu, Chanel, Versace, Missoni and much more.

The miniskirt first gained popularity in the ’60s and ’70s as a playful and even a cultural icon for society. It signified a political youth movement where teens no longer wanted to dress like their parents. It was a rebellious garment, representing the shift in societal dynamics. For instance, Mary Quant was the first woman who pioneered 60’s fashion in London. Super short skirts and dresses became her signature look, helping to popularize the miniskirt globally.

“There’s a combination of generational desire to go back to a time in fashion when it was fun and mindless,” celebrity stylist and Emmy Award–winning costume designer Zerina Akers said about the mini’s comeback.

“It seems like there’s a group of us who are super nostalgic, and then there’s this new younger generation that’s exploring it and are inspired by these archival images of pop stars like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, or Beyoncé.” She noted, “Not to mention they make your legs look longer!”

Miu Miu presented extreme micro miniskirts, ranging from skirt sets to preppy pleats with belly buttons, hipbones and upper thighs on display. While at Versace, electric shades solidified the presence of miniskirts in bold shades like lime green and hot pink.

In 2021, the appearance of the mini- and micro skirt felt like a response to pandemic-caused restrictions. It felt like going back to the past, to a rebellious moment for society where people were happy to cover their faces, but not but their bellies and thighs! Sweats were shed, skin-baring tops and low-rise bottoms were au courant, and designers like Chanel, Courrèges, Etro, Miu Miu, Prada, Versace, Blumarine, Sandy Liang, Missoni, Balmain, Max Mara, and more are proving the appetite to show off our stems and dive back into the electricity of the outside world.

The mini of this moment features a more structured silhouette. It can be low- or high-rise without being scared of colour.
