Chanel unveiled its Cruise 2022-23 collection that promised a wondrous trip to Monaco, as the label’s current creative director Virginie Viard pays an ode to the late Karl Lagerfeld and his legacy.
Set at the Beach Hotel with a stunning view of Karl’s villa, La Vigie, the show left the guests wanting more.
The Creative Director Virginie Viard wanted to bring back the Chanel classic moments with Mediterranean style. She was inspired by the place itself, her personal memories there and Karl Lagerfeld himself and his holiday villa in Monaco. The iconic Monte-Carlo institutions such as the Casino and the Grand Prix also added a playful and interesting mix to the show.
“Karl was dreaming about it. From this magnificent venue, one can glimpse his villa, La Vigie. I will never forget the times I spent there: terraces and balconies, big umbrellas, baskets of flowers – so much beauty,” So, the show journeyed over to the Beach Hotel and its cinematic beauty.
The Chanel Cruise ’22/23 collection offered pieces that can be styled effortlessly. It also featured ready-to-wear solid colour jumpsuits, dreamy and flowy chiffon dresses and matching co-rods crafted with the Chanel signature tweed.
The collection also offered shirt dress bags that were designed like tennis racquets and shiny swimming suits that took a fresh approach in the forms of asymmetrical black skirts or draped dresses. Chanel’s Cruise 2022 footwear line took inspiration from the Monte-Carlo ballet and dancers’ black satin shoes adorned by thin strass buckles.
“A sporty atmosphere, but not only. There are lots of tweed or silk jumpsuits lined with light terry cloth. Many sequins and flowers shape embroidered plastrons adorning thinly striped long shirt-dresses with white high collars – a nod to Karl –, a sequined midnight blue dress, or backless tops worn over wide-cut trousers.” said the Creative Director Virginie Viard talking to the press about the collection.
Chanel’s Cruise ’22-’23 was clearly based on its history. It was punctuated by inspirational places that contributed to shaping its style, establishing its codes and enhancing its creativity. Among these emblematic sources of inspiration, Monte-Carlo held a special place. Its bonds with Chanel began in the 1910s, when Gabrielle Chanel discovered the Principality of Monaco and its surrounding region and were strengthened by Karl Lagerfeld from the 1980s onwards.
Virginie Viard could revive the Riviera spirit of freedom and sophistication that perfectly reflected the idea of a fashion anchored in modernity.
