On the final day of New York Fashion Week, Tom Ford’s Spring/Summer 2023 show presented the crowd with ’80s gilded glamour. The SS23 Tom Ford runway show brings together classic elements that make people fall in love with the glamour of New York Fashion Week. Though the designer’s star-studded front row should have been the main focus of the evening, keeping our eyes off the at Tom Ford’s Spring 2023 show on Wednesday proved difficult. As it is expected, latest Tom Ford’s collections displayed and explored the chicest form of unapologetic sex appeal – with lashings of glamour, it did not disappoint at all.

The show is split in three: looks for daytime, looks for the party, and looks for the after-party. Firstly, we saw Tom Ford’s version of sportswear – disco shorts in black and silver, belts, low-slung tracksuits in lilac lame. Secondly, the show was followed by a fresh take on the Ford twin set of pencil skirt and plunging-neck blouse – his most beloved 70s-style which made him such a success at Gucci in the 90s.

The glamorous show also brought together a formidable front row with celebs as Madonna, Erykah Badu, Nicole Richie, Ciara, Lori Harvery and Chris Rock – to show a collection that was unapologetically OTT. Models walked on the runway wearing leather, lurex, and silk. Sheer lace lingerie turned into daywear together with metallic and gold and leather trousers and gowns with thigh-high splits and cut-outs. It also turned into daywear courtesy of oversized leather and crocodile skin jackets. The final section was exclusively designed for the after-party or more-directed Oscars friendly celebrations. It was here where we saw the Hadid sisters closing the show in showstopper jewel-sequin gowns paired with sequined earrings.

For the Spring-Summer 2023 menswear looks, Tom Ford opted for the minimal, although a Barbie-pink suit took first prize for red carpet wearability. Tom Ford also wore his models in slicked hair back as a reference to Austin Butler’s much hyped turn as the king of rock and roll. Hair was crimped, exaggerated, and sky high. Besides, the label was also inspired by the 1980s which blended nicely with the maximalist mood of current fashion. During the runway show, the soundtrack gave us 80s vibes with the following hits: Queen (‘Time Waits For No One.’), A-Ha (‘Take on Me’) and Robert Palmer (‘Addicted to Love.’).

Unfortunately, in what has been an otherwise diverse and sustainable fashion week in New York, Tom Ford’s show was noticeably lacking in body diversity. Plus-sized models Paloma Elsesser, Devyn Garcia and Precious Lee have been on virtually every other catwalk except this one.
